When I died I came back to Earth Tried to see what life was worth And I was all alone I walked down my old street Making my way through dust and debris I came to the grave where I lay I left before the world was blown away I saw God he said to find whoever you can Lead them guide them it's part of a plan It will soon be over and you will return But not until you've saved a soul You have much to learn I walked the Earth a thousand times No sign of life nothing left behind I knew that I was forgot God had moved on and I was left alone I saw God he said to find whoever you can Lead them guide them it's part of a plan But I saw no sign of God on this barren earth I believe it's over and my soul is doomed to wander

I fell for a girl, when I was twenty-one We met in Chicago and we had us some fun But she lived in Boston and me in LA So we went our separate ways Then we started talkin’ on the phone at night Trading stories and it felt just right So one day I called her said I’m coming out east Be there next Tuesday and can I see you please She said that’s alright with me Baby it’s fine with me Now I only have to wait for one more week Until I see you again I only have a bus ride, two flights an hour on the train until I see you again I’m up at four AM for twelve hours of traveling and then I’ll see you again And the whole way I’ll be thinking oh why’d I have to fall For a girl who lives so far away from home Just a bus ride, two flights an hour on the train until I see you again I walked up to your building and I opened the door Lugged my big suitcase up to the fourth floor My heart was racing, my stomach was in knots Come on in, you said. The door is unlocked And there you were, in nothing but a nightie A glass of wine in one hand and fire in your eyes Well that’s when I knew we would be ok Even though to get here took a whole damn day But that’s alright with me Baby it’s fine with me You know I’d even travel for a whole week Just to see you again I only have a bus ride, two flights an hour on the train until I see you again I have to keep myself from falling asleep cause I’m about to see you again I’ve never felt this way before But baby I sure wish you lived next door Just a bus ride, two flights an hour on the train until I see you again We made it work as the years rolled by But it tore me apart when we'd say goodbye Yes I’ll admit sometimes I’d wanna quit But I kept on working to make you mine And then said you were moving out west You’d thought it all over and this was for the best Now we’re together nearly everyday And I’m so happy I don’t have to say I only have a bus ride, two flights an hour on the train until I see you again I feel alive it’s just a drive down the 5 for me to see you again I’m so glad you moved out to Cali But it ain’t perfect - you’re downtown, I’m in the valley Hey no more bus rides, planes or hours on the train just to see you again

about

This is an EP I recorded on January 7th, 2014 at Wild Sound Studios in Minneapolis. I've always wanted to make a record in a day and always wanted to do a solo acoustic guitar record so this project killed those two birds with one stone.

I recorded the whole thing (except Back to Earth) on a beautiful Hoffman guitar built by Ron Tracy. Back to Earth was done on an old Ibanez nylon string guitar.

The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Steve Kaul. Huge thanks goes out to Steve for working so hard to get this project done in a day (no lunch breaks were taken) and for being such good company in the studio.

I'd also like to thank Jim "Redford" Sanders for painting the album art.

"Damage the Highs" is dedicated to Redford. Here's the story behind the tune (written in January of 2014)

Damage the Highs: This song was written for a dear friend of mine - Jim "Redford" Sanders. Redford and I have worked together in Frankie Valli's band for the last four years - I play guitar and he is the front of house sound engineer.

During the sound checks before our concerts I usually play the Leo Kottke song "William Powell" to check the acoustic guitar. The first time I played it Redford instantly recognized the tune as Leo's and I found out that he used to mix Mr. Kottke back when he opened for Crosby, Stills and Nash. We bonded over our mutual love for Leo's music - Red has a few good stories about him too.

Now in addition to being an exceptional sound engineer Redford is also quite a good painter. He showed me a few of the works he'd made and I loved them so I asked if I could commission a painting. We made a deal: one song for one painting. The song would be Leo Kottke-esque and the painting would feature my favorite guitar (a National Resonator). The artwork for this song is Redford's painting.

This recording was done on a beautiful Hoffman guitar built by Ron Tracy. I met Ron at Hoffman's shop in Minneapolis about a week before doing the recording and he was kind enough to lend me this fantastic instrument for the session. I'm extremely grateful to him, I don't think I've ever played a finer acoustic guitar. Incidentally, Ron does repair work on Leo Kottke's instruments when he is in town.

There it is - the story of the tune.

Love you Redford!
